The client was facing a lot of problems due to unexpected failures in the components of the ship. They wanted to have a solution that could
- Improve the availability of the ship
The subsystems of the ship were thoroughly studied and, a physical model was formulated using the functional and dysfunctional analysis to assess the remaining useful life of the subsystems.
- Track the real-time location of the ships
A new feature was developed for the client so that they can track the location of all their vessels and ships in real-time.
- Have an onboard monitoring interface
An onboard monitoring interface was designed and installed on the ship to supervise the behaviour of the subsystems of the ship in real-time.
PREDICT was able to provide a solution that could prevent failures in engine injectors by appropriate monitoring of the relevant indicators. Apart from identifying the operational problems, PREDICT was also able to identify problems that resulted due to a defect in the design of the propeller of the ship.
Sometimes the design of the propeller may lead to cavitation problems when the ships travel at a very high speed. Cavitation could lead to corrosion and, even fatigue failure of the propeller blades resulting in a substantial amount of increase in the cost of repairing or replacing the components of the ship. Hence, it is essential to implement methods to reduce cavitation.
In addition to identifying the cavitation problems, PREDICT was able to help the customer in preventing the cavitation by providing an overall view of the operation of various subsystems of the ship and generating alerts whenever the operational behaviour drifts from the expected behaviour.
